대규모 재개발로 완전히 사라진 고향에 대한 기억은 내가 산업디자인을 전공하고 도시재생 실무를 접하게 된 근본적인 바탕이 되었다. 낙후된 공간의 흔적과 구조를 보존하려 노력했던 실무의 경험은 역설적으로 사라져가는 풍경의 지층을 붙잡으려는 현재의 예술적 태도로 이어졌다.
서울 한복판에서 고층 건물들에 의해 창밖의 산이 서서히 지워지는 과정을 목격하며, 나는 “오늘이 산이 가장 많이 보이는 날”이라는 자각에 닿았다. 어릴 적부터 산을 통해 세계를 감각해온 내게 이 시야의 상실은 체념을 넘어, 풍경의 변화를 예술적 실천으로 끌어오는 결정적인 계기가 되었다.
현재 나는 도시의 수직적 팽창 속에서 상실되고 있는 우리 주변의 산들에 주목한다. 획일적인 구조물들로 채워지는 도시 풍경 속에서 단순한 기록 사진을 넘어, 조각난 풍경을 잇고 파편화된 우리의 감각을 온전히 회복하게 하는 물리적 장치를 구현하는 데 집중하고 있다.
The memory of my hometown, which completely vanished due to large-scale redevelopment, became the fundamental basis for my majoring in industrial design and working in urban regeneration. My professional experience in striving to preserve the traces and structures of neglected spaces paradoxically led to my current artistic attitude of preserving the layers of disappearing landscapes.
While witnessing the gradual erasure of the mountains outside my window by high-rise buildings in the heart of Seoul, I came to the realization that "Today is the day the mountain is most visible." For someone who has perceived the world through mountains since childhood, this loss of vision went beyond resignation and became a decisive turning point in bringing the changes in the landscape into my artistic practice.
Currently, I focus on the mountains around us that are being lost amidst the city's vertical expansion. Moving beyond simple documentary photography within an urban landscape filled with monolithic structures, I am concentrating on building sensory devices that reconnect fragmented landscapes and recover our lost senses of a whole world.
